Prologue

The Phantom is seen composing at his organ by a gaslamp. We see danced the imagined scenario of the opera he is writing. Muses appear in the forms of Darkness, Despair, Beauty and Purity as his music dictates. We see characters of the Phantom's opera take shape as he imagines them. He falls asleep at the desk and a figure (The Persian, a professional rival and lover of Carlotta) appears and steals his music. As he is about to make his escape, the Phantom wakes and in the ensuing struggle the gaslamp is broken. The Phantom is engulfed in flames and the Persian leaves him for dead.
